The Center for Religion and Public Life (CRPL) has organized
an educational field engagement at the Ebenezer Methodist Cathedral as part of
its ongoing advocacy and public education initiatives. The program sought to
engage participants in dialogue on LGBTQ+ rights and the Ghana Human Rights and
Family Values Bill, while drawing lessons from the Old and New Testament to
promote understanding between faith and human rights.
The objectives of the engagement included educating
participants on the provisions and implications of the Ghana Human Rights and
Family Values Bill, promoting awareness of LGBTQ+ issues within a faith-based
context, and fostering dialogue that encourages tolerance and respect for human
dignity.
During the session, participants received a presentation on
the content and societal impact of the bill, followed by discussions on human
dignity, non-discrimination, and inclusivity. A Bible study session further
explored themes of justice, compassion, and love, emphasizing the need for
mutual respect within communities. The open forum that followed provided
participants with the opportunity to ask questions and share their perspectives
in a safe and respectful environment.
Participants showed strong interest throughout the program
and actively engaged in the discussions. The session revealed limited knowledge
of the bill among some attendees, highlighting the importance of such
educational initiatives. The integration of biblical teachings helped bridge
the gap between faith and social justice, leading to greater openness and
reflection among participants.
The field work resulted in increased awareness of the Ghana
Human Rights and Family Values Bill, improved understanding of LGBTQ+ issues
from a biblical and human rights perspective, and strengthened dialogue between
faith and social responsibility. Despite initial sensitivity around the topic,
the engagement achieved its goal of fostering respectful discussion and mutual
understanding.
The CRPL reaffirmed its commitment to promoting dialogue and
education that advance inclusivity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence across
faith communities in Ghana.
